Things you guys dislike

Now I am sure that you guys hate MANY things.
I sure hate billions of things like math. :)
So here, in this suggestion, you can write all your dislikes! You may also explain why you hate em'! You can even make a non-influence map.(Thank you Roxblaster) So an anti map but you don't have to make one.

@Immortal, who are you asking?

You know what's dangerous? Dihydrogen monoxide. One town banned it.

What's most horrifying about that chemical is that it's in our tap.

You know what other element is dangerous.

Hydrogen. Especially when you stuff it in a giant balloon.

oxygen's pretty scary too. We have to breath it, yet it is especially flammable. Kinda makes you wonder how torch-swallowers do their thing.

With the similarities in gaming groups aside, I doubt you'll do much with knowing my first name.

I've tried setting fire to air. It works pretty effectively. All you need is a match and the matching matchbox. you light it, and FWOOSH! Fire is burning the air.

NEW! megaman4ever
In Finnish, you pronounce like you write, so it would be [Esa], but I think it's a little like....

The 'e' part of 'ai'(like, the first part of what you sound like when you pronounce the 'a' letter), and then... The 'Es' is quite like pronouncing the letter 's' actually and a like pronouncing the first part of letter 'i'.

I guess it would be like 's-i', with the 'i' being the first part of pronouncing the letter 'i'.

That's neat! Mine's actually Jared, I picked up the nickname "Hobbes" because of two reasons. 1: my love for "Calvin and Hobbes" and 2: I'm tall, laid back and sarcastic.

@what is truth, my point was more about the fact that without the matchbox, the oxygen wouldn't be burning. It doesn't burn without fuel, or whatever the word is.

The oxygen allows the rest of the stuff to burn. It can't burn without it, however some things produce oxygen as they burn.

Yeah. The few rules to this site include one which someone just broke, although he/she/it tried to circumvent it. There are a lot of intelligent and non-profane words that are fine for conversation and convey your point effectively, although I admit some curse words express emotion with greater strength on occasion. Nonetheless... polite society frowns upon them. I feel like a totally elitist writer typing this. Oh well. :D

you know what I hate? I hate when people refuse to live their lives according to what they believe. I suffer from this malady quite often. It's very common among the human race.

"There are a lot of intelligent and non-profane words that are fine for conversation and convey your point effectively, although I admit some curse words express emotion with greater strength on occasion. Nonetheless... polite society frowns upon them."

But it is the very fact that polite society frowns upon them that gives these words any strength.

"I hate when people refuse to live their lives according to what they believe."

Eh, you'd rather people didn't live with regards to society and just did what they wanted to? While I agree with the sentiment, I think a lot of things would fall apart if that were to happen.

25 Sep 2010 [comment_38217]
NEW! what is truth
I'd really rather not turn this suggestion into another forum about arguments, but I love a challenge... I'll just say a few things. If you respond to this, please refer it to either a new suggestion for such things or Religion. Which doesn't really have all religious topics anyway.

Maybe they get their strength from that fact, but i think certain words just have an emphatic sound that is very satisfying. Hard sounds like "c" and "sh" are just more adapted to the situation where you'd want to use them.

And... hypocrisy doesn't do society any good.

26 Sep 2010 [comment_38234]
NEW! firestorm
This suggestion has already turned into random discussion anyway, from the looks of it, so starting a new suggestion for a reply seems unneccessary.

Firstly just a minor point, 'sh' is not a hard sound.

Secondly, could you expand on your hypocrisy comment? I'm seeing a few different interpretations and it's not clear to me which you intend.

26 Sep 2010 [comment_38238]

It is true that normal words can have as much of a satisfying effect as swear words without being swear words.

NEW! what is truth
I got you Darren. and did I say hard? I meant harsh. or hard. Either one. sh is definitely a harsh sound.

Well... if people didn't live with regards to society and just did what they wanted to, we'd have a bunch of people who are up front about what they believe. If people lived according to the full ramifications of what they believed, what is good would be separated from what is bad, and thus, society could be greatly improved. We'd know what's beneficial to believe and what's not.

26 Sep 2010 [comment_38313]

NEW! what is truth
what's that? taoism? that's taoism, right?

27 Sep 2010 [comment_38390]
NEW! Roxblaster
Is it wrong to kill in self defense?

It's wrong to kill, but you should defend yourself, so it's hard to define whether the combined action and thought is good or bad.

This is not to say that the good negates the bad, the two aspects are pretty concrete by themselves.

The fact is, we all do wrong things and right things, so people, regardless of good or bad actions, do end up as some sort of mixture. A shade of gray, if you will. It's impossible to find someone who's perfect while it's equally impossible to find someone who has made every wrong decision in their life.

In a Christian viewpoint, that shade of gray is too much for us, thus the need of Christ to wipe it out, but that does not deny the fact that people are always mixtures. A thief might be very kind to animals, for example. One does not redeem the other, but they are both parts of his character.

It's not so much Taoism as it is just logic, in my opinion.

27 Sep 2010 [comment_38393]
NEW!

28 Sep 2010 [comment_38411]

We've come up with a censoring convention:
replace said word with [ALTERNATE_WORD(S),_USUALLY_INVOLVING_DESSERTS]

Example: "i only censored [this chocolate torte] cause i figured it would be considered a swear word like those others
you guys know i try to avoid those things"

NEW! Super_merlin
Also, try to make it ironically humorous.

28 Sep 2010 [comment_38449]
NEW! what is truth
I said taoism because it's all about how yin and yang, good and evil, cannot be separated... but then again, steve, you said there would be difficulty in separating them, so i guess it's not quite the same thing.

I like that, eighth note.

Also, I assert that people, regardless of their good actions, are actually intrinsically black. Like trying to wash a cloth that your constantly sweeping through mud.

And it's not wrong to kill. It's wrong to murder. Sometimes we need to go to war to defend what we hold as true.

I deny shades of gray.

29 Sep 2010 [comment_38469]
NEW! firestorm

Well, I'm not a Taoist. Not deliberately anyway.

29 Sep 2010 [comment_38481]

And while washing it, it gets a little lighter, then gets darker, then lighter, etc. It's a very dark shade of gray.

DON'T CONTRADICT MY ANALOGIES I HAVE MONEY.

29 Sep 2010 [comment_38484]
NEW! what is truth
Screw you, I have rules. Wait a minute. Anyways, I still disagree with you. I think that the mud's do dark and the washing is so insignificant, it's like comparing infinity to 5. That's my view. Like glue to the binding, I'm sticking to it. If you wanna implore me, you wanna change my tune, well, i just won't do it.

Your question, Firestorm, should definitely go to religion, because if you want me to answer that question, I'll need to go into absolute morality. Repeat it there if you want my answer. And as I said before, I'd rather this not turn into another Religion suggestion. That's why we have the Religion suggestion.

Well okay then, I'll skirt around the issue of religion.

You assert that everything is either black or white, no shades of grey.

Do you think that if there's some action you* consider to be black, that someone else, no matter their society/upbringing/circumstances who considers it a white action, is wrong? That actions are always good or evil to everyone and no matter how valid reasons someone has for disagreeing with you* on this, they are completely wrong?

*Substitute you for whatever authority you consider yourself beholden to.

30 Sep 2010 [comment_38533]

Yes. I am a totally narrow-minded person. I'll admit it. It's what I believe. But 2+2 always equals 4. Believing otherwise is being open-minded, but believing the truth is being narrow-minded. I'm making an absolute truth claim. Just clarifying before you ask.

And does anyone mind if this turns into a second religious debate? it would be kind of ironic because it would be under "things people dislike."

and Hobbes: I like your style. do you know this?

This is a song about my two loves... I love skittle and combos... and if you want to see our faces glow, bring some to our next show.

People doesn't refer to the specific people group you're trying to identify. And to me, politically correct just makes it harder to be clear. I'm not talking about being socially respectful. Some terms are offensive. But don't be so inoffensive that you can't even identify them. White people. Black people. Yellow people. Well, maybe not the last one. I wouldn't really care if anyone called me that, but it's unnecessary because of the term, "Asian."

What is thermodynamics?

3 Oct 2010 [comment_38660]
NEW! Super_merlin
Thermodynamics is a group of laws about energy.

Here's the first two. Energy can bot be created or destroyed, only change states. The amount of entropy in an isolated system always increases.

3 Oct 2010 [comment_38662]
NEW! what is truth
And so, the universe cannot be eternal because eventually, the entropy (disorder) would totally destroy the universe as we know it.

3 Oct 2010 [comment_38663]
NEW! Super_merlin
Not exactly. The universe would be different, but it'd be the same universe
A useless universe, but a universe.

3 Oct 2010 [comment_38664]
NEW! Roxblaster
Don't mind my interjection, but "As we know it" is key, I think.

3 Oct 2010 [comment_38668]
NEW!
thermo -heat
dyna -power
ics - study of

thus: thermodynamics is the study of heat and power. Entropy is the measure of quality for energy, low entropy describes energy that is useful, and it degrades as it gains entropy.

0th Law: if two systems are in equilibrium with a third system, they are in equilibrium with each other as well.

3rd Law: you cannot reach absolute zero.

4 Oct 2010 [comment_38669]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
Thermodynamics sounds very interesting!

4 Oct 2010 [comment_38675]
NEW! Darren
Alternatively, the first law of thermodynamics:
Heat is work and work is head
The second law of thermodynamics:
Head cannot of itself pass from one body to a hotter body.

I dunno if that's accurate but it's sure as heck in an awesome song XD

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38697]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
Ok. I wrote down all the laws and I am going to tape it on my wall.

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38698]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
The amount of entropy in an isolated system always increases.

Pretend this "isolated system" is an empty room. The entropy can't really change. As nothing is really going on. The entropy should stay constant right?

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38702]
NEW! Darren
Maybe you should get a better understanding of the word "entropy"?

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38707]
NEW! megaman4ever
.....................

Yes, what Darren said.

You would need more understanding of physics on the small scale.

And as always, Wikipedia is your friend, but the topic is quite high-level, you might not make much out of it, really. I doubt I'd understand(or more, bother to read) it all, if any, really, myself. Obviously, note's already on university level and the thermodynamics was a hot topic in the religion suggestion a while back.

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38709]
NEW!
if nothing ever changes in the room, time does not exist in the room.

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38715]
NEW! steve
That reminds me of Djelibeibi in the Discworld novels. (Kind of based on ancient Egypt) we might say that not much changed there. Mr Pratchett said time ran slowly there, like treacle, if I remember correctly.

Time is funny stuff. Like if time is needed for change, and if there was no time at the beginning of the universe, how did the universe get going?

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38720]
NEW! Super_merlin
For instance, the walls are deteriorating. The wooden floor is rotting.

An easy definition for entropy is "disorder". But this is on a very tiny level. Things may get more ordered, but disorder is released as a result.

I'd highly recommend this book: Science Matters: Achieving Scientific Literacy.

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38727]
NEW!
I'm imagining that the boundaries/walls/floors are just dimensions defining a 3 dimensional space. (there's nothing actually around the room, or rather, I'm considering the room to be everything that is slightly inside of the walls, not including the walls) and that the isolated system is a vacuum, and that you are measuring within a precision where no processes are occurring(cannot really measure vacuum energy anyways, as far as I know, otherwise, we'd be trying to use it for power)

Thus the change in S, or entropy, would be constant(to the precision in which you are measuring)(thus @crazy, you are approximately correct)(the key is that you were very vague in your assumptions)

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38734]
NEW! firestorm
I'd say there was time before the universe began, but with nothing at all going on, nothing to measure anything against, the whole concept was meaningless. It's not like time suddenly started happening after but rather before there just, wasn't.
(Improper comma usage I know, but in my head there's a pause in the sentence there.)
Though to my (admittedly not relevant at all) knowledge, the start of the universe is still not really known about (and is rather a strange concept, really).

Personally I think 'time' as we imagine it is a rather artificial construct, anyway.
(Please don't ask me to explain what I mean there, I have the thoughts in my head that lead to that clear sentence, but I can't really put those thoughts into coherent sentences.)

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38735]
NEW! Super_merlin
Not quite.

It's not really an isolated system if there's nothing in it. It's just a vacuum.

Not to mention, the entropy can't really increase if there is no energy in to increase in it's disorder.

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38737]
NEW! firestorm
(I'm aware it's a rather inconvenient request for me to make an odd statement then ask that noone asks for me to explain in more detail.)

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38738]
NEW! Super_merlin
Your pretty much right firestorm. Anything that may have happened before the beginning of the universe would have no effect on it. Therefore, it's meaningless. It also mean that it doesn't matter how it got there, as long as it did.

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38744]
NEW!
The definition of an isolated system has nothing to do with what's inside of it. just what enters, and what leaves.

5 Oct 2010 [comment_38745]
NEW! Darren
Thermodynamic entropy is a measure of how organized or disorganized energy is in a system of atoms or molecules. It is measured in Joules of energy per unit Kelvin. Entropy is an important part of the third law of thermodynamics.
Imagine that a group of molecules has ten units of energy. If the energy in those molecules is perfectly organized, then the molecules can do ten units of work. However, if the energy were to become less organized (that is, the entropy were to increase), the molecules might only be able to do six units of work, even though they still have ten units of energy in them.

From Simple Wikipedia.

6 Oct 2010 [comment_38747]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
Yes. I do know what entropy is but ya, I guess it is not an isolated system then. I did find something cool though. A fridge decreases and increases the entropy.
