Time Efficient Mines

It feels like the energy mines are looking for too much stuff/collisions.(Since they slow down the gameeven if the screen is clear) I think I'm going to spend some time looking to speed them up a bit.

Well no. Not that old, unless you want command line only.

Would command line only be able to run all those text based adventures? What about DOS games?

I love DOS games.I have the DOS box installed onto my computer.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop, it's allot simpler than I thought it was gonna be.

Anything I should know as a new user?

8 May 2010 [comment_32628]
NEW! steve
Yeah, you can buy music in Rhythm box from the online store, and if you sign up to Ubuntu one, your music will be automatically available on all your ubuntu machines. Or from windows by going to the ubuntu one website.

Click on your name at the top and you can manage all your IM and broadcast accounts (twitter, facebook etc) and set your status for all them at once as well as posting to them all at once. If you enter your flickr account details in here, it will be available in FSpot (the photo manager) and you can easily export photos to flickr in a couple of clicks.

Also, you don't need to worry about viruses any more.

If you want to install software go to Applications > Software Center. It's easy to search in there and install away. In short Ubuntu is freakin awesome - welcome on board!

PS. Oh yeah, if you have an iphone there is an app available to sync your contacts with Evolution (the mail client in Ubuntu).

Also, 10.04 works with iPhone OS devices, so you can add songs and stuff.

8 May 2010 [comment_32642]
NEW! Hobbes
When I was installing it, it said something about being able to install on the same hard drive as windows. Would it be "safe" to try this option on my main machine, or would that be stupid and a major risk to all my windows stuff?

Now for the newbie questions, from me and Dad...

Can I run DOS based files? Are there file types that Ubuntu can't use, if so what are they? What stuff can it do that windows can't? (and vice versa)

8 May 2010 [comment_32659]
NEW! megaman4ever
Haha! I already asked about DOS files.

...No response. I'm interested in hearing what the ubuntu users have to say to Hobbes' questions.

9 May 2010 [comment_32684]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
I plan to use Ubuntu but im still seeing if it is good and safe.

9 May 2010 [comment_32699]
NEW! megaman4ever
It's safe, no doubt. Good probably too. And dual boot. Why not try when you have the almighty dual boot.

9 May 2010 [comment_32701]
NEW! Hobbes
What I meant by "Would it be 'safe'" is, I already have windows 7 installed on my machine and I haven't partitioned the hard drive at all. (1.36 Tb hard drive)

Will it safely install without effecting my windows stuff to much?

9 May 2010 [comment_32707]
NEW! steve
It will resize your Windows partition. I have done this many times with no problem, but that's on XP and Vista machines, haven't tried with 7 yet.

It should be fine, but it may freak you out because the next time you boot into windows it will do a check disk. Don't be alarmed, that's normal.

If you want to install Ubuntu with no risk at all, use the Wubi installer. Insert the Ubuntu disk in Windows and it will install like a normal windows program. You can even uninstall it using Add/Remove programs in windows. When you next reboot you'll get the choice of booting Ubuntu or Windows.

Only disadvantages of doing it this way
- Ubuntu will run slightly slower than normal since it is using the windows file system through a translation layer
- Ubuntu won't be able to see the windows part of the hard drive so you lose the ability to scan for windows viruses from the safety of Ubuntu

But neither of these things matter if all you want to do is have a look at it.

If you find yourself missing the eye candy from Win7 try Kubuntu as well. I'm using it on my big computer and freaking loving it!

@DOS people - DOS box is said to run almost all DOS games perfectly. I don't know cos I haven't tried it.

9 May 2010 [comment_32716]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
Kubuntu? Is that like an improved version of Ubuntu?

9 May 2010 [comment_32726]
NEW! megaman4ever
So Steve, you're saying DOS box works on ubuntu?(or WINE)

You should have tried it then. You can play Epic MR with it, you know. It's such an EPIC alpha. And y'know, if I finish it someday, you can play it then.

9 May 2010 [comment_32728]
NEW! Hobbes
I would also like to know what "Kubuntu" is.

So, if I were to boot from the Ubuntu disk that I made the other day and select the option to install alongside windows it would/should make a new partition and install Ubuntu there?

10 May 2010 [comment_32735]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
Someone has to close the bold tag.

10 May 2010 [comment_32741]
NEW! megaman4ever

10 May 2010 [comment_32764]
NEW! steve
@Hobbes if you boot from the disk and install, it will create a separate partition. If you insert the disk within Windows and install from there, it won't.

Kubuntu is the KDE version of Ubuntu. Unlike Windows Linux has a choice of desktops. KDE used to be the most popular, now Gnome is more popular but KDE4 is pretty awesome. Gnome is faster though so better for Netbooks. Even faster again is XFCE the version of ubuntu with that is called Xubuntu.

Try Ubuntu first but if you don't like it try Kubuntu - it's more Windows like as well so you might find it easier. On the other hand it's a little rougher around the edges, and sometimes doesn't 'just work' like Ubuntu does.

I'm sticking with Ubuntu for my Eee1000 but I'm very happy with Kubuntu on my big desktop.

@megaman4ever to install dos box just type
sudo apt-get install dosbox
to run go to Applications > Games > DOSBox Emulator

I'll try running EPIC merlin in it once I've answered the rest of the comments.

11 May 2010 [comment_32811]

KDE is the K Desktop Envirement.

While in windows, you have to have a start button, on Linux you can have whatever you want.

So hey. What are some good things to start out on in Ubuntu that'll help me learn how to use it better?

12 May 2010 [comment_32915]
NEW! steve
Oooh where to begin?

I think the first thing to learn (it took me ages to find this out) is that the equivalent of task manager on Ubuntu is not the thing that looks most like it.

If you go to

System > Administration > System Monitor

You'll see something that looks like task manager on Windows. However, if your desktop gets screwed up really badly, this little baby ain't gonna help.

Instead press ctrl-alt-f1 and you'll end up at a full screen command line. From here you can login by typing your username and password.

Run
top
to see which processes are killing your system and then
sudo killall [name of process]
to kill it off.

Finally press ctrl-alt-f7 to go back to your original desktop.

You may now notice that pressing ctrl-alt-(f1-f6) gives you six different command line screens.

Press ctrl-c at any time on the command line to quit the program or instruction that's running and get your prompt back.

This my come in useful or you may never need it. I'll post other things next time.

12 May 2010 [comment_32924]
NEW! Darren
@Steve, my laptop currently runs kubuntu so going to ubuntu wouldn't be a huge change; at least not as huge as jumping straight from windows would have been. Of course, I'd rather try it out first but I'm not sure how XD

Ah yes. My friend had a weird Vista theme which apparently hacked his vista so he could change the desktop as he pleased.

I once had his show a few of his creations. They were.... Most obscure. But very intriguing and he seemed to have all the most important stuff on show and all the other important stuff he needed right there one click away. It... I can't even explain it. It didn't look like windows at all. It looked like an arcade racing machine screen, more like=O

I just played Zelda 2.It is good but for some reason I kinda like 1 better.Just the way you fight enemies in Zelda 2 is a little weird.Off to go play paper mario 64!

14 May 2010 [comment_33233]
NEW! megaman4ever
It's only paper mario as far as I recall, not paper mario 64.

Details, but it's sort of the same as mixing Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros I think.

15 May 2010 [comment_33238]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
I just felt like saying 64.I think that it is pretty stupid that at the end of almost every nintendo game it says 64.It is a weird and annoying gimmick.

15 May 2010 [comment_33253]
NEW! megaman4ever
Hm. It's only after nintendo published games for the 64.

I believe it is there for the same reason Super NES games often had 'Super' in front of their names - to enforce the idea that the game needs the console and to grow Nintendo's ego by showing they are better than others by having 64-bit consoles.

15 May 2010 [comment_33254]
NEW! megaman4ever
And no, I really don't know why the games have the 64 often. I understand the console, but the games?

I mean Super actually still shows it is better than the old one, usually. And don't forget Sega - I believe Nintendo wanted to show their games were Super games, in this case, better than the old one, or better than Sega's. Because Segas games were so ordinary and Nintendo's were Super.... Yeah you get the point by now.

It's just my personal belief.

Oh, the original paper mario was great. so was TTYD. the third seemed not as good.

15 May 2010 [comment_33288]
NEW! megaman4ever
I loved super paper mario. I hadn't played the other paper marios before that though.

I played paper mario some time.. It was really slow paced. Too many cutscenes you can't skip, long battles against goombas.. etc. Didn't really like it, but I only 'scratched the surface', as you could say. Does it have alot of optional stuff? Sidequests? Alot of hidden collectables? Replay value? Things to do after storyline?

Those kind of stuff really made Super paper Mario awesome, in addition to the sort of sad story and awesome level design with some puzzles and very cleverly hidden treasure.
It had the card system, all the recipes, the great 100 challenge dungeon which I actually completed on easy(never bothered to cook items strong enough for flopside), and, tons of stuff, really.

Dude! I loooove Super Paper Mario! I likle the other two as well, (the second being better) but Super Paper Mario I think was my favorite! The ONLY thing that sort of bugged me was that there was a fair amount of waling back and forth, but I definitly like it a lot.

Castlevania II
Castlevania III
Clu Clu Land

Final Fantasy @
Galaga
Ghosts' n Goblins @
Ice Climber
Ice Hockey @
Joust @
Kid Icarus @
Kirby's Adventure @
Mega Man @
Mega Man 2 @
Mega Man 3 @
dunno haven't beaten rest but they are cool as well
Metal Gear @
Metroid @
Mike Tyson's Punch Out!
NES Open Tournament Golf @
Ninja Gaiden @
Ninja Gaiden II
Ninja Gaiden III
R. C. Pro-Am 2

Remember that the @ are games I actually really enjoy(and have beaten most of them too), but that includes some games I just loved as a kid and then found again later, for example, so consider it just my personal opinion. Whether or not you like them is not my problem.

Ah, and this huge voting thing also may help: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=916386&topic=51440644

Isn't Earthbound Mother 2, not Mother?

I'm kinda surprised you consider Metal Gear to be an awesome game. I mean yes it was the precursor to the MGS series, but on it's own it was a pretty unimpressive game, I felt. Like 'you need to put the explosive charges on the feet of the Metal Gear at the end in the right sequence' with no real reason for why a specific sequence matters at all (and why should it?).
(I also played it on an MSX emulator rather than NES, maybe it's different?)

3 Jun 2010 [comment_34078]
NEW! megaman4ever
Yes, the NES metal gear has some differences. I know the gameplay isn't that great, but I find it really challenging and have this urge of trying to beat it.

I'm a completionist. I never rest until I beat a game 100%.

3 Jun 2010 [comment_34084]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
How about pokemon? That is a really hard game to 100% defeat.

3 Jun 2010 [comment_34091]
NEW! Super_merlin
The series goes like this.

1. Mother. It was translated to English, and planned to be released uner the title of Earth Bound. It was cancelled however. A test copy was found, and put on the Internet called Earthbound 0.

2. Mother 2. This was released in the US, called Earthbound. (No space).

2.5 Earthbound 64. A nintendo 64 sequel. Cancelled for all regions. What work had been done went into the real Mother 3.

3. Mother 3. This was not officialy translated to English, however, awesome fan/hax0rz Tomato translated it. You don't usually call it Earthbound 2.

But that's about it.

15 Jun 2010 [comment_34537]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
I don't really know why. It is just that it is one of the new consoles. I really like retro consoles like the NES.

15 Jun 2010 [comment_34546]
NEW! Super_merlin
I like how you can make games for it, but it's 100$ a year to put them on any xbox, even your own. I will admit it is really powerful for how cheap it is.

15 Jun 2010 [comment_34555]
NEW! megaman4ever
But PS3 and Wii are new consoles as well - let me ask another question then.

Why are PS3 and Wii good? Or reversely, why did you exclude them form that list?

16 Jun 2010 [comment_34627]
NEW! crazymerlinman321
I don't really know I mean they are decent but I'd prefer older consoles. They are better than the Xbox IMO but i guess I just forgot. The DS is new but I like it. I don't really hate new consoles but I just prefer the retro consoles.

I would love to but could you explain what I have got to bug test? I don't really get this whole cast editor thing yet. I just the procedure for the bug-test.

Forget what I said above. :S
I meant I need the procedure for the bug-test.
Looks like I didn't check twice. XD

NEW!
first, make sure you are using mrO 22 or 24
then, in the script object folder (within the cast folder) you will find a file named obj_mine (may not be exact name, but it will be something very close to that)

Now, open it in wordpad, and replace everything in it with that comment. Save and close. play mr on a map featuring energy mines.(and not much else) Then, figure out if it would be better for the mines to go off more often, or if they are still slowing things down too much. Go back into obj_mine and raise or lower the number after "i[#timeToCollide] = "(this number is the number of frames between each collision check)
Save and close. Play some more mr. You should try on screens that have few enemies, a medium number of enemies, a lot of enemies, a lot of different teams... any combination you can think of. There will be tradeoffs here and there(it will work better with some conditions than others, you should maybe try and get it to work best then there is a medium number of enemies and two enemy teams in the room?)

Then you should also test it out on a map that has fire, and pit monsters.

Ya when I play it says "Script Error". I copied and pasted everything you said in the comment before I asked how to do the bug-test.
I think it is because all the writing is written vertically not horizontally.
The stuff is going like this:
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
But does it have to be like this?
...........................................................................................................................................
If it does have to be horizontal, how do I switch it from vertical to horizontal?

What? What are you talking about?

NEW!
In the file, it should look the same as it looks in the comment.

I know. It just says "Script Error".

This might help: use word pad as opposed to notepad. Notepad doesn't keep the spacing if I remember right.
