The Suggestion...
I'll be using this suggestion as a blog of sorts and put progress/changes here as well, since I don't feel like spamming the other suggestion where I first stated doing this full.
All conversation about the subject should be moved here, please.
On to the more detailed thing and a roadmap or something:
I made the rule, DMaps, Map, Midis, Tiles and all sorts of basic data copied from 2.10Demo over and edited it to my needs excluding Tiles. I also downloaded all the tools I need(namely, the fan game kit), and will be replacing some graphics with MR ones. I thought of using the octoroks as goblins(rock->arrow) and Stalfos, obviously, as the skeletons, and will be replacing those image files. I dunno about the rest.
I made also a simple base idea to make this on, but I wold need a structure and of course, ideas. That's because I want to know how the players want it to be. Eventually I will be posting this on pureZC.com and/or ZeldaClassic.com, I guess that's ok with you, Steve?
Things that need to be done:
-actual maps
-graphics
-ideas
-world structure(as in, have one overworld, smaller overworld and dungeons, linked dungeons?)
-items and possibly their modifications(I don't think I'll go on to make a custom build though.. I'm not THAT good with ZQuest)
-everything else I/we come up with
Yeah, I agree, the name 'Epic MR' is snazzy=P
So on to the thing, my big question:
How should I make it like? My ideas:
-Have one big overworld so it will be like MR2/MR3 where you try to fight your way from one point to the end?
-Make overworld and dungeons and have Lin.. I mean Merlin get most of the items there, maybe coupled with some plot and bosses(for example, if I copied the map from MR2, then made my golden castle as a dungeon to where you would get the GMG.. Just an example)?
-Make linked DMaps, which would be something like having mostly small islands maybe each with a small idea and not much to explore after you are done with getting all the plot things finished there and maybe a couple of items?
-Have MULTIPLE overworlds(ok, probably not going to make this one) - it might be sort of like OoT or LttP where you can hop through time freely - you would go from one overworld to another with similar qualities maybe?
-Make it linear? By linear I mean sort of like the linked DMap idea, but you having to 'hop' from one 'island' to another in the same order every time?
Anyway, those are pretty much the possibilities I came up - if you can think of what you would want the game to be fit into one of the categories, then post a comment=D
Why get you 10 or so other people so involved? Well, I want to feel like I'm doing something big, and I want to make it something we all enjoy. I also want to raise some sort of hype, maybe=)
I think that with most of those ideas(maybe not with the 2 overworld thing) it would take atleast to fall 2010, but I can say, it will be done before 2012;) Probably a playable.. shortish and probably buggy thing is ready in two weeks from now. It just takes alot of time to make the whole base thing and import everything before getting to the map, I apologise.

Whoa! Much more text than I thought... I guess it just shows how excited I'm to get my hands on good ol' ZQuest again.
Wait,
So this is MR crossed with zelda?
Awesome.
So this is MR crossed with zelda?
Awesome.
It will be the most epic MR!
Well, sort of, Gnorthan. Here is an example:
This is Zelda Classic. It should look familiar(1st quest map, hint hint):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQnQuhiPi04
This also is Zelda Classic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zBfmXO8jmU
And even this is Zelda Calssic:
http://www.youtube.com/user/BikdipOnABus#p/c/B288EE23E03194AE/9/LTfvpZkv8kU
That quite shows the flexibility of the Zelda Classic engine, which is actually a perfect clone of Zelda 1, originally.

So MR mixed with the zelda engine
Yeah! That's about it.
Anyway, back to my question on the world's structure(s). Any ideas?
Anyway, back to my question on the world's structure(s). Any ideas?
The sword should be a big part of the game.
I was thinking about yes, involving the sword, but instead mask it as the punch animation! Then when you get the white/magic sword, you would get the energy punch!
And I was thinking not including sword beams, but I thought about maybe getting rid of the punch eventually and make an higher-level additional sword that shoots beams masked as the energy blast.
I was thinking of including something like four to six spells as both swords and items. That would come further up, I need to get the other stuff made first before starting to mask the attacks or thinking about all 'item substitutions'.

The sword should definetly be in the game and a beam sword sounds cool!
They won't feel like the swords in the game, but technically, engine-wise, they will be handled as swords.
Ok that makes sense
Well, maybe excluding the Golden Sword if I decide to use it.
I came onto some problems today when trying to import some stuff so I'm pointing them out to Steve:
1. I wasn't able to import images. The file format is not supported. Could I get some 256 color bitmaps to try out? Namely I would like to get Merlin's WWLK0001, WWLK0003, WWLK0005 and WWLK0007 - I'm going to make Merlin's movement work before working on other stuff.
2. The palettes. I figured I will need to modify some palettes to fit any MR image in, and I heard MR1 tiles were made with palettes? Could I get the color info on those in any way, or even some color info on Merlin(I know, I could just dig all this up myself, but I figured you might have the data still somewhere)? Actually I'd rather make Merlin first, the tiles themselves can wait.
3. Midis. None of the music was in fan game kit, maybe you could send it over to me(anybody who has it..)? And I really think the music are midis, if they are not.. Well, then obviously I will need to dig some other music, maybe include the Midna's lament I presented in the 'forest of sad memories' suggestion?
Well, ask if anything was unclear. I have 4 empty 16-color palettes, and the graphic tile size is 16x16, however I can combo them to make larger ones like 32x32, don't worry about that.

I look forward to following the progress of this.
The graphics can be converted using the gimp or some other batch processor.
I'll add uploading the music to my to do list.

Ya i love listening to the MR music,it is sooo cool!
Seems I will finally be getting GIMP then.
Can I see a palette in it? I may need to make some images simpler to fit it all on 4 palettes, but with the NES resolution, I don't think it will matter.

It is epic, yes.
As you can see, I got energy blast masked as a sword, I made oktoroks shoot arrows, and... Well, that's about it. I need to flip the arrows they shoot and make the energy blast work as a sword beam. And of course, make a good palette for merlin and mask him in as well, but I think I'll keep the Link look for now.
So far looking good.

I didn't fail my entrance exams, and I believe I can get some serious progress now.

Yes some more progress!I cannot wait to play the game, the only thing im scared of is that we are not focusing on MR4.
Well, since I don't really know how to make things for MR, and you know, all that hard stuff like making animations....
But I know how to use ZQuest. Before I will start making the map too much, I still want someone to give an answer to the question I've already asked.
After I get that started, I probably will quickly throw in some more stuff and make a playable alpha of maybe ~10 screens. And from that, it shall only expand.

Sounds like you've got your future planned.:)
Yes, except for "I still want someone to give an answer to the question I've already asked".
I dunno, I really haven't planned that much, but of course I want to make it playable quickly.

One overworld, with many underworlds. Like, you enter a "dungeon" and its called "The Dead Woods"
The overworld could just be a set of paths linking around through all the different areas, as per mr4.

The maps should be easy though
Yeah, that's the idea I liked most as well, ♪.
Crazy, fiddling with the dmaps and warps is quite easy - it's the way to make many tricks, but it can go wrong in many places.
For example, if you want to keep the same map, but change the music? Can't do it. You have to make a new map where the first screen is where you want the music to change, then make a dmap for it, set the music in dmap properties to be different, then set warps on both map A and map B. This gives the result of when you go on the edge of map A, it warps you to map B so that the player doesn't notice anything else but on map B the music is different. You can fail often by for example forgetting to do it so that if you go from map B to map A, it doesn't warp you, instead you go to an empty screen or something.
Another usual fail is by making the warp coordinates wrong and the warp side wrong on either of the two maps.

Wow,i never thought of it that way!
Yeah, I mean, how hard could it be to change the music?
But while the system seems to be very flexible, it all still is the same engine Zelda 1 runs on, and that is pretty old. That said, it's not very beginner-friendly. They see a video of a cool custom quest, a image of the editor and think "wow I just need to put down some tiles to make awesome maps". Nope, won't work that easily.
I know, making MR from director is probably harder than using an editor, but it's still not simple.

I actually found out I've tried this before too when exploring my old comp for custom quests in case I want to play my old saves again! I think I'll use the new base though, I'm much better now than then, and I have no idea what stuff I had made already, or how.
This epic MR will it be really called epic MR or is it something else like Zelda MR?I know it says epic MR everywhere but i just want to be sure:)
Well, the name is open for changes, but as of now, the qst file is called Epic MR.
Also, I finally did something that took time and worked perfectly! Well, almost perfectly, but perfectly enough!
As you can see, I made and got work the Merlin palette!! Now I just need to use that palette and mask all the different Merlin images on top of the Link images=D
It took one of the four empty palettes to make, but I think it was worth it to get Merlin in the game. I may need to restrict involving MR tiles in the game, I'd rather keep the MR enemies, but that's fine to me since the tileset I use has tons of terrain.
All the other images look quite weird because it's a palette that doesn't have the colors they do. I also had to simplen the shading a bit to fit it in the 16 color NES style palettes, but I earlier said that I may need to make some images simpler to fit them too.

Wait it will have merlin enemies right?
If I get them imported, yeah. I think some enemies will be too hard to import, but I will try.
By hard to import I mean that there are frame limitations - walking is done with three image frames, for example - 1,2,1,3 - it would mean it first displays frame one, a standing position, then frame two, one with right hand in front, then frame one again and last frame three which has the left hand in front.
In MR spriting, it would mean, for example as Merlin, taking only WWLK1, WWLK3, WWLK1(which is a copy of WWLK5 I think) and WWLK7, effectively dropping half the frames. I hope it will look smooth enough - the low anim speed conpensates though.

And lo! There he is! Merlin has finally infiltrated the Zelda world too, and is lurking at the bottom right corner!

Cool! :)
I had to fiddle with the sprites to make the walk looke better - my original plan didn't work after all.
Well, soon it's out of ZQuest for testing. No, I won't release it here yet - I still haven't done everything I need to from the side of sprites.
Turns out I can't flip the oktorok weapon after all - I guess I will use them as the skeleton head thrower instead since I can have the head always fly in the same way, but it would look too weird for arrows to go backwards!

Okay... I decided to upload the current version.
http://www.filedropper.com/epicmr2
Aside from many, many graphical glitches and some other bugs, it seems to work fine.
You will also need zelda-w from http://www.zeldaclassic.com
Click on the download link and get version 2.10.
I know, I should still make Merlin look like he is bobbing up and down. Don't bother to message about bugs, I probably know it already. Just a very skimmed pretaste of the game.
More versions in the future - for now I will go sleep though. I don't bother to make a bug/half-completeness list, there are too many things. Maybe I'll make a better version for Imoortal_merlin's birthday gift=D
Oh yeah, already forgot. After installing the Zelda Classic and booting zelda-w.exe, a nice fire logo will appear. Press enter. Then the title screen will come, here press esc and adjust the options like keys and stuff to what you would like. Then just click away from the menu to resume. That menu also acts as a method to pause the game quickly.
When in file select, choose register new name, write a name, and press the key you chose to be 'A' twice to bring the custom quest selector. Browse to EpicMR2.qst and click OK a few times. Then just browse to the name and press enter(or whatever you assigned START to).
If you liked it.. Well, then you probably have low expectations or love very bad quality. But I guess it's a nice thing you might like it though.

I stumbled on another big problem. The animation set I use has it's own way of doing things, and one of those things is minimizing frames.
The thing is - I need an image of Merlin from behind(facing up). Make it almost symmetrical and the same height as 'normal' Merlin, and it will be good.
This means that his face obviously won't show... You get the picture? Well, anyone who actually could do that to me would be awesome=D
No need to think about shading too much, I'll do that myself(palette will come as an issue otherwise).

Really, that looks like the snes engine with the nes GUI.
It is buggy but it is still very good,i like it.
It's an upgraded nes engine. However it has a custom tileset to make it look smoother.
Made the up image myself - going to test a few more things and hopefully I can get Merlin's graphics work perfectly.
I'm still a little sad about the huge frame limitation, but I guess I'll just have to suck it up and try to make it look natural.

A new and improved version!
At first I thought of importing the Merlin graphics.. That only worked for two images so far... So I made new ones!
http://www.filedropper.com/epicmr3
Well, It's much better aesthetically, and a bit easier as well.
And I've purged most of the bugs, so if there's something game-shattering or you want me to change a graphic, I'm open for that now as well.
Next? I think I will continue on planning and making the graphics. After that? I guess I will expand the miniature map by adding a test dungeon, and with that addition, you can actually beat the map. For now you can just get the triforce and say 'woohoo' by yourself lol.

I'm afraid I will have only a little time for Epic MR during the weekend - turns out I didn't bother with the essays earlier so I need to repent for it by doing school work all weekend=/

That's ok:)
I will have the golden sword in definitely, yes. The question is: Sword beams or not?
If I make the golden sword lv3, what should be the lv2 sword? More powerful spell than Energy Blast? Maybe some throwable item? Perhaps a non-throwable item?

I don't know
Tried to play this on WINE but it doesn't work.
Oooooh well that sucks...
You still have the Vista laptop, right?
Me?
You could try downloading the DOS version and try it via DOSBox or some other DOS emulator.
Or use a very old windows computer.

Yeah I have the Vista laptop, but it's on the floor plugged into a spare monitor so it's a bit of a pain to use (not to mention the agonies of using Vista).
Ya i never really liked Vista.Anyways Megaman4ever may ask you one question?
In my snow ninja suggestion,I said it would be cool to make a MRXMAS but then you said MR4 is a bigger priority so we have to focus on that.Right now you are making epic MR.Why?

Because I don't have the capability of making code for enemies in MR Open.
While I believe since that is not 'real' code, just a bunch of letters the program then parses, it wouldn't be too hard to understand the stuff, I still would require quite a bit of knowledge about the core workings of the MR mechanism.
While I do have some sort of idea how things work(MR: TB), it isn't enough to program things in.
I could be making maps, but then again, Steve is the one making the MR4 map, so I don't see what use that would get us.
And lastly, while I do not think my images/animations are all bad, I feel too lazy to get the needed tools and learn/relearn/analyze how they work.
So instead, I'm doing the thing I'm good at... Using ZQuest, and.. Making comments.

Ahh! A week with no exams? Perfect. I might actually get progress running again with this lil' project!
After next week, however, I have a big exam on every day. Sigh. School's ending is cool, but... 5 Exams on the same week? Not so much.

first term I verily had an exam every second day... which would be pretty welcome in comparison to what I just had ->two in one day then others after :(

Haha, yeah, I AM ERROR is awesome.
The hypothesis I belive the most in is that the name originally in Japanese was Er-ro-l, but due to r and l sounding the same, the translators failed and made it Error instead of Errol.
I also find NORTH WEST SOUTH WEST IS THE PATH quite mysterious.
And I even find the fact that a Toad in Mario&Luigi RPG 3 says 'The beans are hidden everywhere in the kingdom. They are a secret to everybody, though!' very amusing.

Anyway, the good news is they are making a linux port. In the meantime I'll try it on windows next time I'm upstairs lying on the floor.

Page fault at eip=0011e6a... blah de blah de blah you get the idea.
Anyway, the good news is they are making a linux port. In the meantime I'll try it on windows next time I'm upstairs lying on the floor.
Steve: Try FreeDOS in a virtual machine.
Dagda nadae?
Hey Megaman4ever,do you have the back of Merlin yet?
I'll try it sometime when I have time.
You mean make the back Steve?
I think he mean FreeDOS in a Virtual Machine.
Yup FreeDos in a virtual machine is what I meant.
So same question,Have you done the back yet?
You haven't played the new version? You need to make a new save for each new version, remember that too.
To quote me:
"A new and improved version!
At first I thought of importing the Merlin graphics.. That only worked for two images so far... So I made new ones!

Every time I click it,it takes me too the homepage of the site.So how do I play it?
Huh? That's weird. I guess the file expired, which might be a good thing too though, considering it was just an alpha.
Well, I reuploaded it.

Well, I attempted at making a dungeon the fast way, and thus Epic MR 0.04 was born. But it failed.
It's way too buggy to be released, and you would need the cheat even to complete it! I need to do further research on why it didn't work.
But the good news is, atleast I'm working on it. I guess I'll have to do it the longer way, separate dmaps and linking... Which I rather don't like to do.
Estimated time for the new mini-dungeon expansion release would be... Next week's weekend. I doubt I'll get it up today(I noticed a few other bugs while playing ver0.03 too), and from tomorrow on I'll need to concentrate on my school again.

Thank you.The alpha is quite cool.
What's this? I actually bothered to fix the dungeon? Yes! That means I made a new version for all of you to 'enjoy'(if that is possible with such a crappy game in the first place;) )
Anywayy.. I did not fix the old bugs, I only made the mini-dungeon(5 rooms) work and fiddled some parametres, such as the player start life.
http://www.filedropper.com/epicmr4
Next? I should really get to fix the bugs that persist from older versions, and then I'll be making some bit more difficult modifications like setting the DMap system so that it supports new additions better. I guess I'll change some palettes and try to fit in enemies from MR in.

Ok cool.Really nice.
Sooooooo...when is the next version of Epic MR coming?
Well, I THINK I might have a back-up SOMEWHERE.
I hope so - I did find the colosseum after all, there's a good chance!
But the problem is, I didn't get 2.10 work with WINE either. I even didn't get 2.50L Beta 13something work! That is, the latest linux beta(well, probably not latest at the time of writing, it's been a few weeks since that)!
When I get it work and all the other hurdles in my life from the way, I might some day return to this.
...I'll roadmap it to remember.

So I remembered this from said roadmapping and I'm certain the file is nowhere on my current computer and I can't recall what I developed it on - either way it'll be more hassle to extract it from anywhere than it's worth right now. Maybe I'll remember this again in a year lol.
♪: might be time to work on another project:P

That could well be so :D
Well, right now my current projects are gathering money for a Pandora and getting better at Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Right now in Finland's top 25 ;). Along with entertaining people by commenting here, of course. (although I wonder since when has anyone actually laughed at any of my comments lol)

Still playing SSBB ay? Fancy.
By top 25, do you mean you are in 25th place? :3
By top 25, do you mean you are in 25th place? :3
By top 25, I mean that there are around 20-24 players better than me over here. I can easily name 15 who are definitely much better and around ten who are really hard to beat/who I haven't beaten (yet).
There are only around 30-40 players, but it's really hard to get past anyone since everybody is improving constantly or are really good and only the ones with the will to play a lot find the scene in the first place - "casual" players don't get the urge to just try and find tournaments, challenge and people to play with actively. Plus, you know, there's a limit to how good you can become fast. After that improvement is very subtle and wins against the really good and experienced players are mostly streaks of luck.
That said, it's a great game and the chance of surprising people with new tricks every now and then keeps on motivating to play more, not to mention the deep challenge involved. Besides, tournaments (as well as LAN parties, for instance) are very social events and you get to do a lot of cool stuff you wouldn't otherwise.
Also, I'm definitely sure I added the "target='_blank'" flag inside the [a] tag in my previous comment.
Welcome back, Crazy :D Nice to see this place didn't die while I was away for christmas and new year. That said, happy year 2012 everyone. It might be your last. (although honestly I mostly laugh at the predictions of apocalypse etc, but you never know what can happen, I guess?)
