nope, too long. maybe a main town.
Do you mean that 5 cities is too many, or that 5 cities plus towns is too long?
Let's say a city is 5x5 squares and a town is 3x3. How many should we have? Come to that how big should the overall map be?
I was thinking it should be at least the size of the MR2 map.

5x5? no thats way to much. lets say 3 cities (size 3x3) and 5 towns (size 2x2).
What would you do in cities if there is no money?
Well maybe a town which is the size of a screen. Then there could be walls around it, with gates leading into the wilderness. Also there could be healers, NPCs, services, etc. Stuff like arenas and guilds could be integrated in the town.
Again, this sounds like MR5 (Or an offline MMORPG game which would be bought in a store), but maybe everyone could enter an arena/guild for dueling, etc.

some should be someting like 4x2 and 3x2, depending on where they are and what they've got in them. (Towns right next to an enemy filled cave would be smaller due to attacks)
I'd say more like 3 5x5 cities and 5 3x3 towns
or maybe 3x2 towns

I think that town sizes should be measured in screens. I don't like having a town/city being on the same screen as enemies...
Of course that's only for functioning, live, friendly towns.

Yes you're right. I know I said "squares" but I meant screens.
Oh OK. I actually prefered one-screen towns/cities.
I think towns may have a 'guard' that you have to defeat. I thought of them as being on just one screen... maybe 2x2. I have no idea...

Actually, here's my idea.
2-3 Large Cities, taking 6 Screens. They are completely fortified and friendly to Merlin, and provide services such as a rest stop, merchants, healing, NPCs, etc.
2-3 Medium Citites, taking 4 Screens. They are under attack and must be liberated. Once so they will serve as the large cities did, but to a lesser extent.
About 5 Towns, taking 1-3 Screens. They could be deserted, friendly, safe, unsafe, unfriendly, populated, destroyed, etc. (i.e. Whatever could happen to it)

1- Not a City a Huge Black castle of evil.. Hard like hell....where you can find special items.[not at the end of the level, on the middle]. some like optionable..

Whoa, if you DO go on the whole, 2X2 idea, the map would get huge, I like the Idea of one-screen towns
one-screen towns would be VILLAGES wouldn't they?
Oh cmon, the name wouldn't really matter. I was just saying that ALL settlements would be one screen big
in the towns their could be people who you can talk to for info some guys would be hidden so then they would have better info like in mairo with toads. ya no its just a segestion!?! [im a bad speller]
how would you talk to them, though? would there be an action button?

max: i suppose if you blast the head of a townsperson some other people will notice and start talking. :-)
i dont know. towns seem like a useless addition to the game.
i think one screen towns are nice but i think the viligis should take up a 4th or a 3rd of the screen and the rest would be grass and trees and stuf towns would take up haf and cities would be the whole screen with with like a big sighn that would say "citie this way" on the adacent screens.
ya there should be little shops or somthing you can go into to buy stuff with some new kind of money, eh?
could one of the towns have a bakery you could go into?!!!??!?!? I dont know what the point would be but it would be cool because i like pie and some bakerys make pie!

ermmm...i think that the cities or town should be the same thing and only take up one screen and have many shops. and people to give you stuff if you do what they ask like kill 20 gobs or something to get a potion.
I don't know, really.
i dunno i just like pie. i do like cheese too though of course.

If towns etc. did have different types like AzErT suggested, then each game could have them randomized (if possible) so each game plays slightly different. Or this might be pointless.
Commenting on early coment, but the map should be even bigger than in MR2.
I like firestorms idea about random towns to add interest and replayablity.
