At first I thought "no guns!" but then I remembered the Flamethrower Dragons and the Golden Machine Gun, and so I think this could work.

They have got backup.
And anyway, the Goblins were originally ranged.

this would be like a later game goblin then? The only problem is the orc already acts like this with the multishoot crossbow thing.

That would be totally awesome! But would they attack merlin or would they be defending their homes against hordes of baddies and merlin helps them???

I just don't know if that would fit into the MR story very well......

I'd say Merlin's on the peasants' side. It makes sense. All part of the same kingdom.
