The Suggestion...
A city or town could be a collection of screens arranged in a square, with a town or city centre square in the middle.
When you first come across a city, it would be overrun with enemies, or might even be an enemy city (like an orc or goblin city). You fight your way to the middle where you fight a big battle. If you win, you restore the rightful king(good town) or install a puppet king (enemy town) who can clear the rest of streets for you, allowing you safe passage around the place . In cunningly designed levels, it might not be possible to get through certain squares without capturing the nearby city.
In order to complete the level it might be neccessary to free or capture all of the cities and towns.

I think the idea is really good, but it might make the game really huge. which, of course, isn't a wholly bad thing, but it would increase the waiting period for MR3. Then again, the game would just be that much better... Hmm... A conundrum. Ah, just go with your gut, Steve.
Max
Max
Not to increase Steve's workload, but it seems that making the game is the hardest part, and the map can be made relatively quickly. In other words, it wouldn't be too hard. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Certainly making the game will be the biggest part of MR3. I'm hoping that for MR4 and 5, I'll be able to spend more time on the map and new enemies.
The map can be made big without increasing the workload too much so long as it's not too detailed. But of course, a lack of detail would tend to make things less interesting, so the question is where to draw the line.
I think this is something that we will know more about once the game is further advanced.

beautiful! i've always loved liberating a town in games having greatful people help you out!
me too! about what ironman said i mean. anyway, steve, i think that one of the cities could perhaps have like hustlers (the guys in trenchcoats who sell illegal goods and know about crimes and stuff) in an alley and he could give you tips on enemies and stuff
Maybe gnomes in trench coats...
you could become the king and get tons of helpers to follow you
Umm how bout more medievil instead of CITIES i mena it's wizards it should be back in time so maybe castles?
Yay! Castles are cooler than cities!
don't castles like have cities inside them? a city surrounded by castle walls, with the like this shape:
=====
=-O-=
=====
The O is the center where king and knights would stay. the - is areas where regular people would be. all around the O is supposed to be those. and = is the walls around it. there could also be towers on them.

Yeah they do, well towns anyway. Mind you some of the ones in LOTR have cities in.
or if you liberate a friendly city you get potions/medkits. and if you crush an enemy city, you get a new spell. and maybe the enemy cities have constantly refilling screens, so if you just want to kill monsters you can go there. thats what I didn't like about the first two, you HAD to beat it. I would have liked to mess around with the energy beam moreso then I got to. just a thought.
I agree with albub in that we need areas of the map you can go to to just blow the heck out of wave after wave of monsters.
Indeed. Someone suggested Arenas for this purpose as well.
yeah i like arena.
Couldn't steve just make the normel game, with maybe 3 or 4 cities, and then add some more, depending on the reviews?
lol gnomes in trenchcoats...maybe gremlins in trenchcoats? ya know, since gremlins are always drunk gremlin hustlers would be funny. you could get them some beer and they could give you info. but where to get it...
any way i vote 5 on this, W00T
any way i vote 5 on this, W00T
lol gnomes in trenchcoats...their beard would look funny, and the pointed hat wouldnt really match the trenchcoat...unless it was a black pointed hat. that would be cool. why not gnome and gremlin huslters? some goblin hustlers might be cool too. lol all hustlers are funny.
lol thats funny "gnomes in trenchcoats" it reminds me of a time when an unsuspecting merchant was sellin fishies' when he was run over by a high speed horse!
...*silence*
...
...
Umm... Actually it sorta reminds me of that too (?)

I like your idea steve, and yeah, make it so enemies respawn in the city screens until you liberate them. Maybe you have to find someone to replace the old ruler as king? And once you're in control, you can do any of the town stuff you decide to implement. Instead of money, you could give up medikits or potions! A tough choice between the golden rocket launcher or half of your max blast potions, huh?
I like the idea of having the cities constantly respawn enemies until they are cleared. People have been asking for a screen where that would happen and this seems like a good way to get it into the game in a way that makes sense.
Mabye an arena where if you kill enough enemys then you get a prize? And you can do the same challenges over and over just for the fun of it! Best of all some challenges could have bosses in them (1 on 1)! ::gasp:: I need to make a suggestion for that before someone else does!
I Like all this talk about arenas and what not, kinda reminds me of Ratchet and Clank
EXELLENT WORK!!!I RATED 5.
maybe when merlin enters a castle or city he will look up, see a lightning bolt crash, say wow a castle or city and then he hears screams and goes in for the rescue to destroy all enemys and save the king:D.If he encounters another then the graphics are skipped and he just says something like arg another castle or city, time to save town again.
If you are MANAger(steve)plz see my comment for The Tangerine Wizard
This is a great idea. It sounds like it would make the game much more in-depth and really generate a world for merlin to live in. (complete with non-enemy creatures!)
Sup i'm a new member and i was thinking, you could like start out in a small village, you need to save the village, then the village elder tells you to go save like the castle to the west from evil rule or something and he gives you the fisrt blast spell. you need to go to that place destroy enemy occupation and restore the rightfull king to power, he gives you permision to recruit soldiers from his castle for the army summon spell wich he gives you.
any thoughts?
any thoughts?
I like popeye's idea about saving the towns giving you new troop types.
I like the arena idea but I think you should keep the hustlers away from being drunk and stuff, I mean there could be kids playing this!
you don't want an 8 year old talking about alchohol! other than that, it is awesome!
you don't want an 8 year old talking about alchohol! other than that, it is awesome!
that areana part you could compete until u get wasted and your monsters could train there with u if they die in the areana u cant use them until u get out.
Maybe you could train your guys in the kings castle or something, you know like there is a jousting tournament or something and you could enter your guy for training or maybe a training ground for soldiers and merlin?
Popeyes full of good ideas. I like his additions to the subject!
Cities...I'm warming to the idea (because Steve suggested it). So, someone said about gnomes in trench coats...if there's money in one of the MR's, they could sell you illegal spells (banned because they're too lethal), or black market experience points, or dodgy potions (some of them could really *remove* the effects of one of the previous potions (in order to teach kids not to trust strangers)) Anyway, I now like the cities idea...what if you got money for saving cities, and most of the city can be damaged by enemies while fighting, and accidentally by you or your army - the less damaged the city is, the more money you get...what do you think, Steve?
maybe each monster could have gold like on other online games wich i'm not going to mention because the only game I like is MR
(cough cough clears throught) and the city's have markets and each market had differant prices for differant stuff. like a nother game I'm not going to mention.

WOOT? Did someone say Ratchet and Clank?!? I love those games!
Err...what LOTR?
Is it Lord of the Rings?
Err...what LOTR?
Is it Lord of the Rings?
you went too far this time, popeye. I'm gonna hafta disagree with you on this one. I'm not convinced money in MR is a good thing.
Money in MR would be a very radical change to game play it would open up a lot of potential and add to the replay-ability if say you bought spells and troops and would add more to the strategy element. Unfortunately, money is very hard to balance and I don't know that everyone wants to go "shopping" with Merlin when they could be blasting goblins. I personally like games with "down-time" to manage your assets. However I don't know how well money in MR would merge.
That said I like the idea of money in MR but that is in part because I like lots of options which admittedly makes a game more complex.

I think that Steve should makke it some time or other, and just let us test it in a largedemo, then let feedback determine the final thingy...
This is just the first suggestion I came across, but will Steve please say something...(important)
yah i don't like the money idea, but maybe you could help the gnome guys out and they give you something in return....i like the lethal spells though!
Donut: Hehe.
Okay.
BIG IDEA
PROCESSING
CITIES!!!!!
nice idea. i like the one idea of popeye that the king could have arenas in his kingdom in which to train ur army (after u have liberated the city). I very much dislike popeyes two other ideas though. No money. Also, the king will already be there, just hiding cause the city is under attak, so u dont need to find a new king or anytin. Also, the kings soldiers should not go outside the city - the can help u inside the city and thats it.
Finally, i just came up with a cool idea. im suggesting it - to be called: 'NEW LAYER!!'
i really like the city idea, Steve!
Thnx for looking,
MR ROX!

Ya, morshe your right, money no good but then we need more things you can do in the citys
Umm...Steve doesn't seem to utterly despise money, so neither should you!
Up with partial mindlesness...
Up with partial mindlesness...
I just made a brilliant suggestion for a city. So now I wait.
Wow...27 votes and a 5 star average... well it is an awesome suggestion...!
this is cool, citys should have more than one level too, and stairs were you could go up and down, it would be cool if you could by medkits from a city after freeing instead of just finding them
Srry i havent been on... I was on vacation! But back to the despising money... if Steve dosent add money, ya the game wont be as fun but if he does people will want score baords, constant updates for new items and stuff like thatbut if he can give that time and wants 2 then i think id be great!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MONEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
*Walks outside at midnight and screams at the sky* - WHY DO THESE PEOPLE WANT MONEY IN THE GAME! WHY! WHY! PLEASE GIVE ME AN ANSWER! - *A large piece of cheese descends from the sky and I pick it up, and go back inside* -Thank you- I whisper quietly. All my problems have now been solved.

MR ROX!, you have hit the nail right on the head.
The reason we want money is so that we can give Merlin the joy of being able to buy, and eat cheese.

I think monney is stuppid and that the city idea is great.
(I tryed to do the same as MR ROX! but there was no cheese falling out of the sky, I cryed the rest of the night because ther was no cheese!).

I dont like the money idea. I like fighting and money would mean less time to do that. Not having money is part of the reason I play this because it makes it unique. Also the arena idea seems good. Training your units in an arena would be fun so you can fight AND make your units level. Also getting the kings troops is a good idea. Errrr... Unless the kings troops could have won on their own. Also like the Black Sorcerrer (or whatever the Final Boss is) should live in an enemy city that is swarming
with enemies that respawn with no building.

Are you gonna answer me Darren or are you not man enough?!?! Come on I not totaly against money its just that since Steve isnt charging and its going by donation he dosent have all the time in the world! Your not the only one with a life! I dont post much cause I have a life! I go swimming, play soccer and hockey, And I play several instruments! What Do you do all day!?!?!? Answer!!!!!!!!!!!!1
popeyethesailorman, you seem very angry but I can't for the life of me work out why. I looked back over the previous comments but I couldn't see where you asked Darren a question.
Anyway, I posted your comment because I wanted to take the opportunity to clarify that the money mentioned here is in the game (like gold coins or something), not real money paid to me that I could spend.

Darren: MERLIN DOESNT NEED TO BUY CHEESE! CHEESE IS A LUXURY THAT WAS MADE EQUAL FOR EVERY MAN IN NEED! AND IF MERLIN DOESNT HAVE MONEY HE'LL BE A MAN IN NEED OF CHEESE, AND IT WILL FALL OUT OF THE SKY FOR HIM!!
You see how important science class is?
Thnx for looking,

I look at this, and I can't take it any more. Money would be an evolutionary step in the MR game. You don't have to use money, you could just blast your way through, but if your not as good, it would give you other options. Also, with steve talking about not being able to create new units with the summoner, you could buy units. Or pay to use a training arena.
(breathe)
Steve, how's the editor coming?

Yes Steve, I was about to say tat: What question?
Umm...*cough*
Umm...*cough*
Sorry, My parents are having marital problems and i've been a little uptight, but it was when Darren told me not to dispise money, i replied with the reasons i thaught money might be a bad idea, i want to know if he aggrees or not.
do this make a city or somthing with a bunch of other wizards that beg u to save them from the evil BS and there should be like hidden items in the game
He's not doing an editor as yet.
PIECHEESE!!!
PIECHEESE!!!
Actually, I'm not so sure now myself (about money) though if there is ever a map maker/game maker/whatever I'd like to see it available in there.
donut(7th apr):well i WAS an 8 year old when you posted that. lol
money creates a wholllleee bunch of opportunities. YOu could buy upgrades for you or yourself, and it would provide a way to ge tmore units.
Please dont make money.... ive said it so many times, but ill say it a thousand more....
I like money. It just gives you so many options of how to use it. Troops, potions, new spells, upgrades... just a whole lot more options to play how you would like to play.
Yes. I agree with Sketch (not following him, it's what I've always thought).
I just wanted to point out that I think this is a great idea.
why did thoes 2 ppl vote lower than 5? if they voted 5 this would be the top in 2 catagoies.
whatever happened to this idea?
At a guess, because they didn't think it was worth voting 5 for. People don't have to justify their votes to others.
♪, I didn't have time to do it. Still like it though.
It would be funny if the king you install was literally a puppet.
