You can download a free trial version from Macromedia's website (google for "macromedia flash MX 2004").
There are also completely free alternatives out there which can output to the flash format so long as you're not trying to do anything too complicated. (google for "swift generator")

thanks steve, i just needed to knwo where to get it.
i got swift generator, but when i click the 'swift.exe' thing a dos box pops up for like one second then disappears. nothing else happens. ??? help.

No you're right, same thing happened to me. Turns out you have to run it from the command line. Even then, all it seems to do is create a flash file from a "script" (whatever that is).

There are quite a few packages which are cheaper than Macromedia's offical packages though. One of them is called "magenta". I don't know how good it is, but it might be worth a look. There's a free trial.

errr... steve, it turns out this was unnecessary. i downloaded a trial of that macromedia thing... and i dont really understand it. :( which sucks cos animation is like my only life dream but i cant just learn it without help. making cartoons would be so fun.

you could try looking at the free trial version of Director. I think it's a bit easier and works better with bitmaps (as opposed to vectors) which makes it better for getting that MR feeling.
There's just one timeline and you import pictures into the cast and then drag them onto the timeline to do animations.
Whichever you go for, you'll probably need to find a book or tutorials on the web to get you started.
If all of that doesn't work out, you can always wait until I make the animScript editor!
