Droppable Weapons

Weapons should be droppable and pick-up-able.

Creatures like Goblins, Orcs and Men drop their weapons when killed. Others can pick up and use them. There would be no size limit to which weapons could be used by which creatures, so you could have a tiny little man or goblin weilding the massive sword that the Black Orc uses.

The damage done would be calculated by the strength of the character plus the damage of the weapon.

Some characters could have ranged or melee or magic bonuses, making them more effective with that type of weapon.

Wands would give a character the ability to cast one of the spells, a magician would wield one to better effect than a goblin, but it would be funny to see a little goblin blasting a few warriors away!

Merlin and the other wizards could also pick up swords and bows if they wished to but in thier old hands they wouldn't be very effective.

Again RPGish, but nice. Weapons could include melee weapons (For melee characters), ranged weapons (For agile characters), and wands, staves, etc. (For spellcasters like Merlin and the other wizards)

Wands could have + to spells or stuff like stronger spells.

Hmm.. .so there will be three types of attack in MR3: Melee, Ranged, and Magic? That sounds neat! A bigger Melee boost could mean higher power slashes, higher Ranged could mean more and faster arrows fired, and high Magic could mean bigger, faster, and better spells like in previous MRs. I like it.

ah.. better idea, when merlin picks up a weapon, he fills it with magic, and uses a huge blast of energy to fling the weapon at an enemy, so not only would the poor goblin get fried, but would also lose his head.

remember merlin is a very old wizard... not a strong warrior

k... sounds cool. Plus I think it'd be neat if you could shoot the weapons while they were on the ground to send them flying around, and if they're like swords or maces and stuff, they'd hurt anyone they hit.

I just wanted people to be able to pick up each other's weapons - just thought it would cool to have a little goblin swinging a massive orc club or something.

I've been giving this a lot of thought lately. If this can be made to work, it means that whole different possiblities become available just by adding a weapon to the database. Suddenly, all enemies who are capable of using that weapon have access to it (once a few are placed in the map). A map which everyone has got bored of playing could be revitalised by adding a new weapon.

It also means that say for example you have a load of skeletons with swords, and a load of orc with clubs on the same screen. Once the skellies die, the orcs might decide that a sword is a better weapon than a club and go pick them up. It adds a new aspect to the play.

No all enemies would be capable of utilising all attacks. Each enemy would have a capability rating so that a wand in the hands of a goblin mage would be far more powerful than in the hands of a goblin, where as a quadranid wouldn't be able to pick it up at all.

If monsters drop weapons, then it would be stupid if you couldn't pick them up. And if you can pick them up and use 'em, doesn't it sort of ruin merlin's awesome wizardness?

You *could* pick them up, but merlin wouldn't do much damage with a sword so you probably wouldn't bother. On the other hand, that armoured warrior you summoned might decide it's better than his sword and use it.

Yeah but its not always about being the most effective with your weapons, it would just be neat to have the option to use a sword like even if its not so powerful or something because its like , hey, we've never done this before and it makes you feel like youre a part of the army of soldiers youve summoned. Also, it'd be cool if you could still use some spells while holding some weapons. One-handed weapons would be useable with basic spells (half-power energy blast, monster summon) and two-handed weapons wouldnt let you cast anything but monster summon (you'd need monster summon to keep the reinforcements coming). My point is I want to be able to have the option of using weapons, even if I wouldnt always use them. Think about it like this: If you don't give him the option to pick up weapons, there will always be at least a few people who are like "aw i wish he could have used those weapons too!", but if you DO let him use weapons, theres probably not anyone whos gonna be like "aw man this would be so much cooler if he couldnt pick up weapons!"

Anyway the reason I typed all that, steve, is because you seem undecided sorta on if Merlin should use weapons, and I think it should be optional.

Oh yeah, I agree. No, I'm pretty in favour of merlin being able to use weapons. The only thing that could put me off is if it turns out to be a right pain to implement but I don't think it will be too bad.

If merlin has a two-handed weapon he should be able to charge it with magic or something, say he charges the giant axe with morph and turns a rock golem into a goblin for a while.

Woah! This is getting outta hand! u cant 'energize' the wepons with magic!!! Steve's original suggestion was great! a lot of ppl say its pointless cause U wouldnt have any reason to pick it up - but like steve said, everyone else could and would, which would be awesome! And watever happened to the fun factor? It would just be fun to wave around a little sword or giant sword or bows and stuff. It doesnt matter if it wouldnt be as strong as ur spells! its like the punch, its just fun to use.
Also, steve, r u still thinking of making a demo with this in it, to test it out?

Nah, I've pretty much dropped this idea. It was too complicated to actually implement, and I would have needed to draw far more animation sequences for each character that was capable of picking up weapons. It was just too much work.

Um, I don't think me doing all the animations for all the charactor with all the weapon types is really a happening thing.
I think it would be better if units collected orbs of power or some other stat enchancers that didn't require a massive amount of graphic work. Perhaps orbs they have would show up when you put your mouse over them similar to the level-up stars.

Yes, I have a bunch of Merlin's Revenge Characters that I have made by myself, and drawing sprites would be a nice hobby for me, even if I'm not too good at it.

I just need to ask, what do you use to make sprites, because right now I use paint, and it has limits and is hard to switch colours.

Some of the sprites I made were the goblin soldier ones that I made and dispayed on my web so you can see that it's not too bad.

Maybe you could just make a basic "sword", and a basic "bow&arrow", and a basic "wand" that everyone can pick up, rather than an enemies dropping their special weapons.

Personally I use Paint Shop Pro 7 to do the initial drawings with. I got it free with a bunch of blank CDs.

Then I use Deluxe Paint IV AGA running on an Amiga emulator (WinUAE) to do the animation.

Then I use Animation Shop 3 to crop the animations down to their required size. Animation Shop comes with Paint Shop Pro 7.

It's all a bit complicated but it suits me. I wouldn't say that it would suit many other people though!

How about a shield? Could have a random chance of protecting against damage, but you wouldn't be able to cast spells quite as well.

An idea could be that you can have a sword and a shield if want, but you can't cast spells, (You probably need at least on hand to do that).

You could have shields that have a random chance of deflecting a melee attack, or ones that make the attacks do less damage. Perhaps when Merling gets hit and is knocked around he should lose grip on his weapons and drop them.

Y'know...

You can have it so that there are only 3 things in the game...

Cutlass- a quick slashing weapon that does low damage.

2 Handed Sword- slow attacking speed, but does higher damage. (3 or 4?)

Wand- Non- magic creatures can fire energy blast according to their level. Magical creatures get a boost into their power, or you can use a special spell.

Crossbow- normal firing speed, fires high velocity bullets, does good damage.

That way, there's only 4 different weapons, rather than everything that every monster uses.

One other thing that would need done is some ai for troops so that they would know when to switch weapons around and some way to tell friendly troops what to use.
For the wands with new powers I have no idea how hard it would be to program the units to aquire and use a new attack. I like the idea of the wands but I don't know how workable it is programaticaly.

Um... my guess would be if an object has a wand, their mana(regeneration, power, speed) would all go up by a given amount.

It would be easier than having every type of weapon in the game... billions of possiblilities.

Everything so far seems rediculously complicated. simplifying things down to 4 weapons would work better, even if it isn't as cool as picking up enemy weapons. Considerign how steve said he pretty much dropped the idea, I guess we should all make a last ditch effort to create alternatives?

Crazy, you don't have to use the morph spell even if you have it you know.

Now that I looked at it though, you sort of seem to have a nice base for something like this since all the different weapons are their own casts and stuff, I guess.

I'd probably be able to write a script in mod_weaponManager that would give precedence to picked up weapons. Writing one that has characters search for weapons however, is not something that I do(because anything I do with the moveTo never sems to work)

The AI for each unit would have to be capable of deciding which weapon to use in a given situation. Probably, the decision would be based on the distance to the enemy and, possibly, which weapon the enemy is using.

Onec we have this 'perfect' AI in place we could make it stupidder for certain units who, for example, wouldn't know what to do with a magic spell if it came up and bit them on the bottom.

Also some units (monsters) might not be capable of picking up dropped weapons. A goblin sword would not be much use to a Rox monster.
