When I try to play MR 1, 2, or 3 on any website it says I need an xtra(text) in a folder and to make sure it's in a folder. I really don't know what to do about that but it won't let me play the game :(

steve replied,

That's a very usual error. It's especially odd since the games don't require any xtras to run. I deliberately didn't use xtras (even though some of them are quite cool) precisely to keep things as simple (and reliable) as possible. Obviously it didn't work. :)

My experience is that the games work best under windows xp running firefox 2. If it's possible to try the games with that setup please do. If not, please tell me what OS and browser you are running and I'll try to look into it, although there isn't usually a lot I can do in these circumstances.

Good luck!

P.S. Does Rapunzel work for you?

i love merlin's revenge! i spent countless amount of hours playing the first two games years ago, and i checked back to see that the 3rd game is finished! i love it! and it's just as effing hard as the first two! ...if not harder...

anyways, just a heads up that i've been getting a constant error. when i move merlin to a new screen and try to summon too quickly, the game crashes on me. thank god i save at every screen though.

i also figure out why the towers (that throw axes) are sometimes built and sometimes not. is it random?

in any case, thanks for the great game, it's almost like i've been growing up with it.

lokey57 replied,

Bug will be forwarded to steve when I get the chance to. As for the towers, the dwarves stop building them the instant they're attacked, so make sure you defend them well!

All the MR games keep crashing by freezing at some random point. I'm using the latest firefox browser.

lokey57 replied,

Can you please give more detail? Is there any paticular message associated with the freeze? Or does it just "die"?

I've played all the merlins revenge games and beaten them many times but i have one question what do the castles do?

lokey57 replied,

Err castles? I'll take a guess that you're referring to the towers dwarfs build.

The towers, when fully constructed, will launch giant axes at the enemies.

If this isn't what you're asking about, can you please clarify on what you mean by "castles"?

In MR3 how do i summon the army?

lokey57 replied,

You can summon the army by doing the following.

First, get the summon army spell.
Second, go to a "blue square map" and fire a blank army summon spell on the blue soldiers. This will "unsummon" them and add them to your army.
Lastly, once you have some soldiers, charge your army summon spell until the desired unit's portrait shows up and fire at a blank spot on the ground.

Congrats! You've summoned an army soldier!

The save won't work on MR:TB and MR3 they don't work on MR2 it shuts the game down.

Do you get any paticular error when it pops up? For example Error:x000300x0x or something like that?

Just to say, I tried to get access to MR1 on my laptop just now, using IE6, and it told me it wouldn't work, which does not fit in with the IE7 thing. It's working on Firefox now, but I just wanted to point that out.

lokey57 replied,

o.0 It won't work on IE6 either? Thanks for letting us know.

On 5th Mar 2008, Jason S. Kong wrote,

It's an interesting game, but I really believe that the yellow weapon broke the game. I could essentially spam it in every room and wipe out every enemy with ease. Even in the 1% rooms, as long as I summoned an army first, I could still spam the yellow fireballs to my heart's desire.

My guess is that the sheer number of projectiles is what makes the yellow weapon so powerful. My suggestion is either to cap the number of yellow balls on the screen (this will reduce the maximum number of projectiles on the screen) to a smaller number.

I am not sure if even this can help nerf it in the 1% rooms, though, as the yellow balls instantly disappear once you place them (and shoot a single fireball). Even in this state, the last four rooms were ridiculously easy to clear. I used the army for the first time and only lost a total of either one or two units (completely unleveled prior to the last four rooms).

The reason why the spam works so well is that any hit on an enemy causes a stun. Since there is such a large volume of fireballs at any time, the chances are that most monsters on the screen are stunned. If the stun-time could either be reduced or neglected for the yellow fireballs, perhaps that would return the balance as well.

These are just suggestions as to how the game might be further balanced.

lokey57 replied,

I agree with the yellow fireballs breaking the game to some degree, it made the game ridiculously easy once you got it. If you have suggestions on how MR3 can be improved, please submit them to the suggestion database.

Thank you!

As for the Merlin's revenge series, I enjoyed one and two but I didn't like three so much. The spells were cool but it didn't seem so great once you go into the woods where you couldn't cast spells. That part just took all the fun out of it. Especially since the soldiers seemed to enjoy getting killed. Maybe next time, you can add something more like a familiar that you can summon and recall when you want to. It could change through the course of the game depending on what you do with it, and it can pull off chained spells or something with you. Or maybe, since merlin is old you could keep the anti-magic areas idea but not for so many places at at time. Maybe only strategic areas where the magic was sealed away then you have to over come a puzzle or something to proceed then give merlin a weapon so that you don't have to rely completely on the "blokes with swords." especially with them being irreplaceable once dead. The bow would be a normal bow that requires ammo, however you could also allow arrows made from magic where magic is allowed. Also, I think it would be kinda nice if you added some puzzles to the game here and there to mix it up a bit. It would make the game more engaging opposed to simply running in and nuking everything in sight. Hope this was constructive enough, and I can't wait to see how your next game works out.

lokey57 replied,

Nice ideas! You should really submit them to the suggestions database.

Sadly I'd have to say MR4 might be a while in coming out. The creator of the MR series and owner of the site has been strucken with carpal tunnel and is in the midst of recovering his hands. So until he's better, or someone else takes over, I'm sad to say that there will be no more MR for a bit.
I'll relay this email to steve when I get the chance though, since I'm only the web administrator. Thanks for your comment!

sorry, that must seem really radnom, but I just got an error message that asked me to report any concerns about the error to that adress. I'm not certain as to whether it has any use, so I figured I'd just put it out in the public and see if anyone knows if the adress still has any use.

Also, I'm thinking of downloading another couple free versions of director and learn some more about it. Do you think Steve could dictate to someone a guide on adding ennemies to the MR3 open? I figured out how to change the stats of ennemies, but any time i try to add some, it errors.

I don't know how to use the army summon spell. Whenever I cast it, nothing shows up on the map at all. Could you explain how it works?

lokey57 replied,

First, you need to collect some troops. Go to the blue squares on the map and "unsummon" the troops already there. Then one you have some troops, charge the army summon until a picture of the desired troop appears. Then release to summon! Hope that helps.
